The Nikon NEF file contains direct output from the camera sensor and camera specific settings. This requires that any program that reads the Nikon RAW .NEF format be updated to include the camera-specific information. Just added UFRaw to GIMP and it now reads D610 NEF files. Twitter 205,000 / Followers. the Nikon D610 is going on seven years old, but if you want a full frame camera, you'll be hard-pressed to find a cheaper one.
